Numbers 1:47
Azerbajani Bible (South) Used in Both Iran and Azerbaijan 2008
What Does This Mean?
This verse from Numbers says that when counting the Israelites, the Levites were not included. It's part of a larger census, and the Levites, who were responsible for religious duties, were treated differently.
Explained for Children
Imagine if during a school count, the teachers weren't included because they have a special job to do. That's what happened here: the Levites, who took care of the tabernacle, weren't counted because their job was different from the other tribes.
Historical Background
Numbers was written by Moses around 1400 BC, during the time the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. The census was to organize the tribes and prepare for their journey to the promised land.
Living It Out Today
Today, we can see this as a reminder that each person has a unique role in their community. Just like the Levites had a special duty, each of us has a unique contribution to make.
