What Does This Mean?
In this verse, Jephthah is making a promise to God. He says that whatever first comes out of his house when he returns from defeating the Ammonites, he will dedicate it to the Lord as a burnt offering. This shows his devotion and seriousness about fulfilling his promise.
Explained for Children
Imagine you make a deal with your friend: if you win the game, you'll give them your favorite toy. Jephthah is doing something like that, but with God. He's saying if he wins the battle, he'll give God the first thing that greets him at home.
Historical Background
This verse is from the Book of Judges, written around 1000 BC. The Book of Judges was compiled by various authors, possibly including Samuel. It was written for the Israelites to remind them of God's power and to encourage them to stay faithful.
Living It Out Today
In modern times, we might promise to donate a week's salary to charity if we get a raise. This shows we're willing to give something significant to God in gratitude, similar to Jephthah's promise.
