Proverbs 24:12 — English Amplified Classic Bible 1987
If you [profess ignorance and] say, Behold, we did not know this, does not He Who weighs and ponders the heart perceive and consider it? And He Who guards your life, does not He know it? And shall not He render to [you and] every man according to his works?
What Does This Mean?
This verse says that if you claim ignorance, God, who understands the heart and keeps watch over your soul, knows the truth. He will judge everyone based on their actions. The speaker is likely a wise teacher warning about accountability.
Explained for Children
Imagine you do something naughty and say you didn’t know it was wrong. Your parents, who know you very well, know if you’re telling the truth. In the same way, God knows everything about us and will judge us fairly based on what we do.
Historical Background
Proverbs 24:12 is part of the book of Proverbs, traditionally attributed to King Solomon, written around 950 BC. It was intended for the Israelites to guide them in righteous living and to understand God’s justice in their daily lives.
Living It Out Today
Consider a situation where someone at work claims they didn’t know a task was important. The boss, who knows the team well, sees through the lie. Similarly, God knows our true intentions and will judge our actions accordingly.
