S'ils ont des maîtres croyants, ils ne doivent pas leur manquer de respect sous prétexte qu'ils sont leurs frères. Au contraire, ils doivent les servir encore mieux, puisque ceux qui bénéficient de leurs services sont des croyants aimés de Dieu. Ces conseils aux esclaves paraissent étranges car l'auteur ne cherche pas à remettre en question le statut de l'esclavage. Il veut avant tout assurer la bonne réputation de la communauté. Cependant il évite les mots « soumission » ou « obéissance ». Avec une nouveauté étonnante, il appelle « frères » les maîtres et les esclaves chrétiens et les invite à des relations de respect et de service (Tite 2.9-10).
