Le Pharaon lui-même en entendit parler et chercha à le faire mourir. Alors Moïse s'enfuit et alla se réfugier dans le pays de Madian. Là, il s'assit près d'un puits. Moïse se sent solidaire de son peuple et il se compromet en vengeant l'un des siens. Il assume déjà le rôle de libérateur de son peuple. Contraint de fuir, comme plus tard Israël, Moïse se dirige vers la péninsule du Sinaï, qui sera le lieu où Israël rencontrera son Dieu pour conclure l'alliance. En cet endroit, Moïse défend de nouveau la cause des opprimés, en chassant les bergers qui persécutaient les filles de Jéthro.
