Aussi la profanation de ce jour sacré attire-t-elle la mort sur le coupable. Le ramassage de la manne (16.22-26) et le commandement du repos (20.8-11) annonçaient la législation du sabbat. Un signe marque chacune des alliances de Dieu: l'arc-en-ciel pour l'alliance universelle entre Dieu et Noé (Gen 9.12-13), la circoncision pour l'alliance avec Abraham (Gen 17.11).
