Isaac doit son nom au rire incrédule qui accompagnait l'annonce de sa naissance à Abraham (en hébreu le nom d'Isaac correspond au verbe traduit par « il rit » en 17.17), ou à Sara (18.12-15). Un nouveau rire accueille sa naissance, mais c'est celui de la joie. On peut toutefois traduire la fin du v. 6: « tous ceux qui entendront parler d'Isaac riront de moi ». Les hauts-faits de Dieu ne peuvent provoquer que la foi ou l'incrédulité.
