1 Corinthians 9:25
Hebrew Bible Modern 1977
What Does This Mean?
In this verse from 1 Corinthians 9:25, the Apostle Paul says that athletes control themselves to win temporary rewards, but Christians should discipline themselves for an eternal reward.
Explained for Children
Imagine you're in a race and you eat healthy food and practice a lot. You do this so you can win a prize, but it might not last long. Paul is saying we need to work hard on our faith because the prize we get from God lasts forever!
Historical Background
Paul wrote 1 Corinthians around AD 53-54 to the Christian community in Corinth, Greece. He was addressing issues of immorality and divisions within the church by using analogies from Greek athletic competitions.
Living It Out Today
Think about a time when you had to work hard for something important, like studying for a big exam or training for a sports event. Just as athletes discipline themselves for temporary rewards, Christians should also discipline their lives for the eternal reward of knowing God.
