John 2:21
Hebrew Bible Modern 1977
What Does This Mean?
In this verse from John's Gospel, Jesus is speaking and he says that when he talked about destroying the temple, he was actually referring to his own body as a metaphor for the temple. This points to his future resurrection after being crucified.
Explained for Children
Imagine if your friend said their toy house could be fixed because they were like the house itself. Jesus is saying something similar: when he talks about the big church building, he means himself and how he will come back to life just like a new house can be built.
Historical Background
The Gospel of John was written by one of Jesus' disciples around 90-100 AD for a mixed Jewish and Gentile audience. At that time, the temple in Jerusalem held great religious significance as it was seen as God's dwelling place on earth.
Living It Out Today
Today, we can apply this concept to understanding our own bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. Just like Jesus’ body was destroyed but resurrected, our actions should reflect the sanctity of our bodies and their purpose in serving God.
