Raja Herodes, yaitu raja provinsi Galilea, mendengar tentang Yesus, karena nama-Nya sudah terkenal di mana-mana. Pada waktu itu, Herodes baru saja membunuh Yohanes Pembaptis. Karena itu dia berkata, “Orang yang menyebut dirinya Yesus itu sebenarnya adalah Yohanes Pembaptis yang sudah hidup kembali dari kematian. Itu sebabnya dia bisa melakukan keajaiban-keajaiban.” Tetapi ada orang lain yang berkata, “Dia adalah Nabi Elia, yang dulu terangkat ke surga dalam keadaan hidup. Sekarang dia kembali dan menyebut dirinya Yesus.” Dan ada juga yang mengatakan, “Yesus adalah seorang nabi yang baru, seperti nabi-nabi pada zaman dulu.” Waktu Herodes mendengar hal itu, dia berkata, “Yesus itu pasti Yohanes Pembaptis!
