In this verse, Samson challenges some Philistines with a riddle about bees in a lion's carcass. He tells them that something sweet came from something strong and deadly. The Philistines couldn't solve the riddle in three days.

The Book of Judges was written by various authors, possibly under the guidance of the prophet Samuel, around 1000-600 BCE. The audience was the Israelites, and the cultural setting reflects the time when judges led Israel between the conquest of Canaan and the establishment of the monarchy.
