Amos 5:26
Czech SNC
What Does This Mean?
Amos is speaking to the Israelites and tells them that they have carried around idols of Moloch and Chiun, which represent false gods they worship instead of God.
Explained for Children
Imagine if you had a special toy that made you feel safe, but it wasn't really magical. Amos is telling people they're carrying around toys like this and pretending they're real gods when only the one true God should be worshipped.
Historical Background
The prophet Amos wrote this during the eighth century BCE to the northern kingdom of Israel. The cultural setting was marked by social injustice and religious syncretism, where people mixed worship practices including idolatry.
Living It Out Today
Today, we might carry around things that we think will make us happy or secure, like money or status, but they can become idols that distract us from God’s true path for our lives. It's important to focus on what truly matters.
