What Does This Mean?
This verse from Luke's Gospel tells us that Joseph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem for a census or tax registration. At the time, Mary was pregnant with Jesus. It highlights the practical challenges they faced as part of God’s plan.
Explained for Children
Imagine your family had to go on a long trip because the government asked everyone to register for taxes. Now imagine you're going with your mom who is about to have a baby! That's what happened to Joseph and Mary, but it was all part of something much bigger God was planning.
Historical Background
The Gospel of Luke was written by Luke, a historian and physician, around AD 80-100. It was meant for a wider audience, including non-Jews. The Roman census required everyone to register in their ancestral town, which is why Joseph and Mary had to go to Bethlehem.
Living It Out Today
Today, you might find yourself traveling or moving during a critical moment in your life because of some external demand. This verse reminds us that even the most inconvenient circumstances can be part of God's plan for our lives.
