What Does This Mean?
Paul is speaking here in Romans and he realizes that even when he wants to do good things, he finds evil present within himself. This shows the struggle between his desire for righteousness and his human nature.
Explained for Children
Imagine you really want to clean your room because it's the right thing to do, but then you see a toy and suddenly you don't feel like cleaning anymore. Paul is saying that even when he wants to do good things, sometimes he feels like playing with toys instead of working hard at being good.
Historical Background
This verse comes from the letter Romans written by Paul around 57 AD. He wrote this to the Roman Christians who were facing cultural and social challenges as both Jews and Gentiles worshipped together in a predominantly pagan society.
Living It Out Today
Imagine you're trying to stick to your diet but every time you see junk food, you feel tempted. This verse helps us understand that it's okay to struggle with our desires, but we should seek God’s help to overcome them.
