Wir saßen an den Flüssen Babylons und weinten, immer wenn wir an Zion dachten.

Unsere Lauten hängten wir an die Zweige der Pappeln, wir hatten aufgehört, auf ihnen zu spielen.

Aber die Peiniger, die uns gefangen hielten, wollten Freudengesänge von uns hören. Höhnisch drängten und forderten sie: »Singt doch eins von euren Zionsliedern!«

Doch wie hätten wir in diesem fremden Land Lieder singen können, die dem Herrn geweiht sind?

O Jerusalem, wenn ich dich jemals vergesse, dann soll meine rechte Hand gelähmt werden!

Die Zunge soll mir am Gaumen kleben bleiben, wenn ich nicht mehr an dich denke, wenn du, mein geliebtes Jerusalem, nicht mehr die größte Freude für mich bist!

Herr, vergiss es den Edomitern nicht, wie sie jubelten, als Jerusalem in die Hände der Feinde fiel! Damals grölten sie: »Reißt sie nieder, diese Stadt! Zerstört ihre Häuser bis auf die Grundmauern!«

Babylon, auch dich wird man niederreißen und verwüsten! Glücklich ist, wer dir heimzahlt, was du uns angetan hast!

Glücklich ist, wer deine kleinen Kinder packt und sie am Felsen zerschmettert!
