The Lord said to Moses,
2
‘Speak to Israel's people. Tell them, “Someone might promise to offer another person as a gift to the Lord. He may pay money as his offering instead of the person.
3
He must pay the value of the offering that he has promised. For a man between 20 years and 60 years old, the value is 50 shekels of silver that they use in the holy place.
4
For a woman, the value is 30 shekels of silver.
5
For a male between 5 years and 20 years old, the value is 20 shekels. For a female of that age, the value is 10 shekels.
6
For a boy between one month and five years old, the value is 5 shekels. For a girl of the same age, the value is 3 shekels.
7
For a man who is older than 60 years, the value is 15 shekels. For a woman of that age, the value is 10 shekels.
8
The person who makes the promise might be too poor to pay the value of his offering. If so, he must bring the person that he has offered to God to the priest. The priest will decide the value of the poor person's offering. He will decide how much money the poor person is able to give.
9
Someone might promise to offer an animal as a gift to the Lord. If it is the kind of animal that the Lord would accept as an offering, the animal becomes a holy offering.
10
The person must not then change his offering in any way. He must not change a good animal for a bad animal. He must not change a bad animal for a good animal. If the person does change one animal for another, both the animals become holy.
11
The animal that the person promises to give might be an unclean animal. The Lord does not accept that kind of animal as an offering. So the person must bring the animal to the priest.
12
The priest will look at the animal to see whether it is good or bad. Then he will decide its value as an offering. The priest is the person who decides the value.
13
The person who promised his animal as an offering might want to buy the animal back. If so, he must pay the value of the animal and add one fifth more.
14
Someone might offer his house as a holy gift to the Lord. The priest will look at the house to see whether it is good or bad. Then he will decide its value as an offering.
15
If the person who offered the house wants to buy it back, he must pay its value and add one fifth more. Then the house will belong to him again.
16
Someone might offer part of his family's land as a holy gift to the Lord. He must decide how much seed the land needs to grow crops. The value of the land will be 50 shekels of silver for each homer of seed that the land needs.
17
If a person gives his land to the Lord in a Jubilee year, the land will have its complete value.
18
But the land's value will be less if the person gives it after the Jubilee year. The priest will count the number of years that remain until the next Jubilee. Then he will decide the value of the land.
19
If the person wants to buy the land back, he must pay its value and add one fifth more. Then the land will belong to him again.
20
It is different if he does not buy the land back and he sells it to someone else. If he does that, he is not allowed to buy the land back for himself.
21
When the next Jubilee year comes, the land will become the Lord 's holy land for ever. It will belong to the priests.
22
Someone might offer to the Lord a field that is not part of his family's land. It might be a field that he has bought from someone.
23
If so, the priest will count how many years remain until the Jubilee year. Then he will decide the value of the field. The person who offered the field to the Lord must pay the money on that day. The money belongs to the Lord as a holy gift.
24
When the Jubilee year comes, the field will belong again to the first owner. It is part of his family's land.
25
The priest is the person who must decide the value of all these offerings. He must use the shekel that they use in the holy place to decide the value. There are 20 gerahs in one shekel.
26
The first baby that an animal gives birth to is holy. It belongs to the Lord. So nobody can offer it as a special gift to the Lord. If it is an ox or a sheep, it already belongs to the Lord.
27
But if it is an unclean animal, the owner may pay to buy it. He must pay the value and add one fifth more. If the owner does not buy it, the priest must sell it to someone else for its value.
28
Someone might give to the Lord as a complete gift something that belongs to him. It might be a person, an animal or part of his family's land. Every gift like that belongs to the Lord for ever as a most holy gift. The priest must not sell it. The owner cannot ever buy it back.
29
If you give a person to the Lord as a complete gift, nobody may buy him back. His punishment must be death.
30
One tenth of all the food that the land provides belongs to the Lord as a holy gift. It may be grain that grows in the fields, or fruit that grows on the trees.
31
If a person chooses to buy back any of his tithe, he must pay its value and add one fifth more.
32
Out of every ten farm animals, one animal is holy. It belongs to the Lord.
33
The owner must not pick what animal he will give to the Lord. He must not change a good animal for a bad animal. He must not change a bad animal for a good animal. If anyone does that, both animals will belong to the Lord as holy animals. The owner cannot buy the animal back for himself.” ’
34
These are the commands that the Lord gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. He told Moses to teach them to Israel's people.
