En el año cuarto del gobierno de Joaquim, hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, mientras Baruc, hijo de Nerías, escribía lo que el profeta Jeremías le dictaba, dijo Jeremías a Baruc:

“Tú, Baruc, dices: ‘¡Ay de mí! ¡El Señor no me da sino penas y dolores! Ya estoy cansado de llorar y no encuentro ningún alivio.’ Pues el Señor dice respecto de ti,

y me manda que te diga: ‘Yo destruyo lo que construí y arranco lo que planté. Y lo mismo haré con toda la tierra.

¿Quieres pedir para ti algo extraordinario? Pues no lo pidas, porque voy a enviar calamidades sobre toda la humanidad. Pero al menos permitiré que conserves tu vida dondequiera que vayas. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.’ ”
