El profeta Jeremías le dio un mensaje a Baruc, hijo de Nerías, en el cuarto año del reinado de Joacim, hijo de Josías, después que Baruc escribió todo lo que Jeremías le había dictado. Le dijo:

«Baruc, esto te dice el Señor, Dios de Israel:

“Tú has dicho: ‘¡Estoy repleto de dificultades! ¿No he sufrido ya lo suficiente? ¡Y ahora el Señor ha añadido más! Estoy agotado de tanto gemir y no encuentro descanso’”.

»Baruc, esto dice el Señor: “Destruiré esta nación que construí; arrancaré lo que planté.

¿Buscas grandes cosas para ti mismo? ¡No lo hagas! Yo traeré un gran desastre sobre todo este pueblo; pero a ti te daré tu vida como recompensa dondequiera que vayas. ¡Yo, el Señor, he hablado!”».
