»Dame, oh Dios, la fianza que demandas. ¿Quién más podría responder por mí?

Tú has ofuscado su pensamiento, por eso no dejarás que triunfen.

Quien por una recompensa denuncia a sus amigos, verá a sus hijos desfallecer.

»Dios me ha puesto en boca de todos; no falta quien me escupa en la cara.

Los ojos se me apagan a causa del dolor; todo mi esqueleto no es más que una sombra.

Los justos ven esto, y se quedan asombrados; los inocentes se indignan contra el impío,

la gente recta se aferra a su camino y los de manos limpias aumentan su fuerza.

»Vengan, pues, todos ustedes; ¡arremetan contra mí! No hallaré entre ustedes a un solo sabio.

Mis días van pasando, mis planes se frustran junto con los anhelos de mi corazón.

Esta gente convierte la noche en día; todo está oscuro, pero insisten: “La luz se acerca.”

Si el único hogar que espero es el sepulcro, he de tenderme a dormir en las tinieblas;

he de llamar “Padre mío”a la corrupción, y “Madre”y “Hermana”a los gusanos.

¿Dónde queda entonces mi esperanza? ¿Quién ve alguna esperanza para mí?

¿Bajará conmigo hasta las puertas de la muerte? ¿Descenderemos juntos hasta el polvo?»
