Roboam se quedó a vivir en Jerusalén, y logró mantener bajo su control las ciudades de las tribus de Judá y de Benjamín. Pudo hacerlo porque protegió y fortaleció algunas ciudades hasta el punto de convertirlas en fortalezas. Además de construir fuertes murallas alrededor de ellas, puso en cada ciudad a jefes del ejército, y los armó con escudos y lanzas. Además, almacenó en las ciudades suficiente comida, aceite y vino. Estas son las ciudades que reforzó: Belén, Etam, Tecoa, Bet-sur, Socó, Adulam, Gat, Maresá, Zif, Adoraim, Laquis, Azecá, Sorá, Aialón y Hebrón.
