Lorsque Baruc, fils de Néria, fixa par écrit les messages que le prophète Jérémie lui dictait, il y avait quatre ans que Joaquim, fils de Josias, était roi de Juda. C'est alors que Jérémie dit à Baruc:

«Voici ce que le Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël, déclare à ton sujet, Baruc.

Tu dis: “Ah! que tout va mal pour moi! J'avais déjà bien des soucis, et le Seigneur y ajoute de nouveaux ennuis. Je suis fatigué de soupirer, et je ne trouve aucun répit!”

Eh bien, voici ce que le Seigneur m'a chargé de déclarer: “Je suis en train de démolir ce que j'avais bâti et de déraciner ce que j'avais planté; je bouleverse le pays tout entier.

Et toi, tu oses réclamer un avantage personnel? Ne réclame rien, car le malheur que je vais envoyer atteindra tout ce qui vit, déclare le Seigneur. Pourtant je te ferai gagner ceci: Tu auras la vie sauve partout où tu voudras aller.” »
