Aujourd'hui encore ma plainte est une révolte, ma main étouffe mon gémissement.

Ah! si je savais où le trouver, si je pouvais accéder au lieu où il est installé,

j'exposerais mon droit devant lui, je remplirais ma bouche d'arguments,

je connaîtrais les propos par lesquels il me répondrait, et je comprendrais ce qu'il me dirait!

Emploierait-il toute sa force à m'accuser? Au contraire, il ferait attention à moi.

Il y aurait là un homme droit qui argumenterait avec lui, et j'échapperais pour toujours à mon juge.

Mais si je vais à l'est, il n'y est pas; à l'ouest, je ne le discerne pas;

s'affaire-t-il au nord, je ne le vois pas; se cache-t-il au sud, je ne l'aperçois pas.

Il connaît pourtant la voie où je me tiens; quand il m'aura éprouvé, je sortirai pur comme l'or.

Mes pieds se sont attachés à ses pas; j'ai gardé sa voie et je n'en ai pas dévié.

Je n'ai pas altéré les commandements de ses lèvres; j'ai fait plier ma volonté aux paroles de sa bouche.

Mais si lui prend une décision, qui pourra l'en faire revenir? Ce qu'il désire, il le fait.

Il accomplira donc le décret qui me concerne, et il en concevra bien d'autres encore.

Voilà pourquoi je suis saisi d'épouvante en face de lui; quand j'y réfléchis, il m'inspire de la frayeur.

Dieu a rendu mon cœur faible, le Puissant m'a rempli d'épouvante.

Mais ce ne sont pas les ténèbres qui me réduiront au silence, ni l'obscurité dont je suis couvert.
