Nahum 3:12
Hebrew Aleppo Codex Bible
What Does This Mean?
This verse from Nahum says that all the strongholds of Nineveh will fall easily, like ripe figs falling off a tree when shaken. The speaker is Nahum, and the key message is about the inevitable downfall of the city due to its wickedness.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a tree full of yummy ripe figs. If someone shakes that tree, all those juicy figs will fall right into your mouth! That's what Nahum says will happen to Nineveh's strongholds – they'll be easy pickings for their enemies, just like the figs.
Historical Background
Nahum wrote this verse around 612 BC, just before the fall of the Assyrian capital, Nineveh. The audience was likely Israelites and Judeans who were oppressed by the Assyrians. Nahum’s prophecy reflects hope for God's judgment on the wicked city.
Living It Out Today
Today, we can see this verse as a reminder that our efforts to hide or defend ourselves from divine justice are futile if they are based on wrongdoings. If we have been behaving wrongly, it's better to seek forgiveness and change our ways before we face inevitable consequences.
