John 4:27
Hebrew Bible Modern 1977
What Does This Mean?
In this verse, Jesus' disciples return and are surprised to see him talking with a woman. They don't ask why he is speaking with her, even though it was unusual for men to talk to women in public at that time.
Explained for Children
Imagine if your friend's mom came over while you were playing outside. Your friends would be really surprised! That's how Jesus' disciples felt seeing him talking to a woman they didn't know.
Historical Background
The Gospel of John was written by one of Jesus’ closest followers, probably around 90-100 AD. It was written for a mixed audience including both Jewish and Gentile believers in the Greco-Roman world where such cultural practices were common。
Living It Out Today
Today, we can apply this to situations where gender or social norms might prevent us from talking to others. Jesus showed that compassion and respect should transcend these boundaries.
