Iotam divenne re a venticinque anni regnò a Gerusalemme sedici anni. Sua madre si chiamava Ierusa ed era figlia di Zadok.

Egli fece la volontà del Signore come suo padre Ozia, però non frequentò il tempio, e il popolo continuò a peggiorare nella sua condotta.

Iotam restaurò la porta superiore del tempio e fece fare molti lavori sulle mura nel quartiere della città chiamato Ofel.

Nel territorio di Giuda fece costruire alcune città sui monti e torri e fortini nei boschi.

Combattè contro il re degli Ammoniti e lo vinse. In quell' anno e nei due seguenti gli Ammoniti pagarono un forte tributo: quasi trentacinque quintali d' argento, tremila tonnellate di grano e altrettante d' orzo.

Iotam rafforzò il suo potere, perché seguì fedelmente il Signore suo Dio.

Gli altri fatti della vita di Iotam, le sue guerre e le sue opere, sono raccontate nel libro "I re di Giuda e d' Israele".

Era diventato re a venticinque anni e regnò a Gerusalemme sedici anni.

Quando morì fu sepolto nella Città di Davide. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Acaz.
