Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Manderò ancora un castigo contro il faraone e il suo paese; poi egli vi lascerà partire di qui. Vi lascerà andare senza condizioni, anzi sarà lui a mandarvi via.

Comanda dunque agli Israeliti che ogni uomo e ogni donna si facciano dare dai vicini oggetti d' argento e d' oro".

Il Signore fece in modo che il popolo incontrasse il favore degli Egiziani. Per di più Mosè stesso era molto stimato in Egitto dai ministri del faraone e da tutto il popolo.

Mosè riferì al faraone: "Così dice il Signore: Verso mezzanotte passerò attraverso l' Egitto
5
e morirà ogni primogenito nel paese, dal primogenito del faraone che regna sull' Egitto fino al primogenito della schiava che lavora alla macina, e anche ogni primogenito del bestiame.

In tutto l' Egitto si alzerà un urlo tale, come non ce n' è mai stato e che non si ripeterà mai più.

Ma tra gli Israeliti, sia tra la gente sia tra il bestiame, non si sentirà abbaiare neanche un cane. Sappiate che il Signore tratta in modo diverso l' Egitto e Israele!

Allora - continuò Mosè - i tuoi ministri verranno da me e si getteranno ai miei piedi dicendo: Vattene, tu con tutto il tuo popolo! Solo dopo di questo me ne andrò". E Mosè, pieno di collera, si allontanò dal faraone.

Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè: "Il faraone non vi darà ascolto; per questo io moltiplicherò in Egitto i miei prodigi".
10
Mosè e Aronne avevano già fatto un gran numero di prodigi davanti al faraone; ma il Signore aveva reso talmente ostinato il cuore del faraone, che non lasciò partire gli Israeliti dal suo paese.
