Baruc figlio di Neria scrisse su un rotolo i messaggi che Geremia gli dettava, nel quarto anno del regno di Ioiakim figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda. In quell' occasione Geremia gli disse:

"Il Signore, Dio d' Israele, mi ha dato un messaggio per te, Baruc.

Tu ti lamenti e dici: "Avevo già abbastanza preoccupazioni e il Signore me ne aggiunge altre. Sono stanco di gemere, non ce la faccio più!".

Senti il messaggio che il Signore mi ha dato per te: Fra poco demolirò quel che ho costruito e sradicherò quel che ho piantato in ogni angolo della terra,

e tu sogni grandi progetti per te? Non farti illusioni, perché manderò una sciagura su tutti gli esseri viventi. Ma per te farò un' eccezione: dovunque ti troverai, potrai salvarti la vita. Te lo prometto io, il Signore".
