Toen zij in verwachting was van een tweeling, zei God dat het eerste kind de dienaar van het tweede zou worden. Daarmee bedoelde Hij de twee volken, die uit deze jongens zouden voortkomen. Want ergens in de Boeken staat dat God gezegd heeft: "Jakob heb Ik liefgehad, maar Esau niet." (b) Voor God stond dat al vast, hoewel zij nog niet eens geboren waren en geen goed of kwaad hadden gedaan. Daardoor was duidelijk dat God nooit iemand uitkiest op grond van diens daden, maar omdat Hij hem riep.
