Kampen ble voldsom, og en av bueskytterne traff Saul så han ble alvorlig såret. Da sa Saul til tjeneren som bar våpenet hans: «Stikk sverdet ditt gjennom meg, så jeg ikke blir mishandlet av fienden.» Men tjeneren var livredd og ville ikke drepe Saul. Derfor tok Saul selv sverdet sitt og lot seg falle over det. Da våpenbæreren hans så at Saul var død, drepte han seg selv på samme måte. Slik døde Saul og de tre sønnene hans, og alle de andre i Sauls hus døde også. Da alle Israels menn som var i dalen forsto at Saul og sønnene hans var døde, la de på flukt fra byene de bodde i. Så kom filisterne og bosatte seg i dem.
