Josef var blitt tatt med ned til Egypt og ble kjøpt av Potifar. Han var faraos hoffmann, en egypter. Han var også øverstkommanderende for livvakten. Herren var med Josef, og han hadde framgang. Han tjente i huset til Potifar, og Potifar så at Herren var med ham og at Josef derfor lyktes med alt det han fikk ansvar for. Derfor fikk Potifar respekt for Josef og gjorde ham til sin personlige tjener. Josef fikk ansvaret for hele huset hans, og han lot Josef ta hånd om alt han eide. Fra det øyeblikket Josef fikk ansvar for hele huset til Potifar og over alt han eide, velsignet Herren Potifar for Josefs skyld. Herrens velsignelse hvilte over alt han eide, både inni og utenfor huset hans. Slik overlot han alt han eide, i Josefs omsorg. Selv fulgte Potifar ikke med på noe, bortsett fra brødet han selv spiste. På alle måter var Josef en vakker mann.
