Jesus svarte med å fortelle en historie: «En jødisk mann var på vei fra Jerusalem ned til Jeriko. På veien ble han overfalt av tyver. De tok av ham klærne, slo ham til han nesten var død og lot ham ligge igjen ved veikanten. Etter en stund kom det tilfeldigvis en prest gående på den samme veien. Da han så den forslåtte mannen, skyndte han seg over på den andre siden av veien og gikk fort videre. Så kom det en levitt gående, det er de som jobber og tjener i tempelet. Også han så den døende mannen ligge der, men passerte på motsatt side av veien. Deretter kom det en samaritan som var ute på reise. Det var ingen i Israel som likte dem fra Samaria. Men da samaritanen så mannen ligge der i veikanten, fikk han dyp medlidenhet med ham. Han gikk bort for å hjelpe ham, renset sårene hans med olje og vin og la bandasje på dem. Så løftet han mannen opp på eselet sitt og tok ham med til et vertshus, der de tok seg av ham.
