In this verse from Jonah, the ship captain wakes up Jonah, who is sleeping through a storm at sea. The captain asks Jonah to pray for help so that they might all survive the tempest.
Explained for Children
Imagine you're playing in your room while a big rainstorm outside makes your parents worry. Your dad comes into your room and says, 'Hey, can you please ask God to calm the storm?' That's kind of what happened here with Jonah on the ship.
Historical Background
Jonah was written by the prophet Jonah around 780-725 BCE. The book recounts Jonah's journey after he fled from a divine mission and found himself in a storm at sea. This story is set against the backdrop of ancient maritime travel where storms were life-threatening.
Living It Out Today
When facing tough situations, it’s important to seek help and not isolate yourself. Just as the ship captain sought Jonah’s assistance during the storm, we should also reach out for support when things get rough in our lives.
