Luke 14:3
Ndebele Bible - 2010
What Does This Mean?
In this verse, Jesus asks the Pharisees and lawyers if it's okay to heal on the Sabbath day. He is challenging their understanding of what work is allowed on that holy day.
Explained for Children
Imagine you have a friend who gets hurt while playing ball on Sunday afternoon. Your parents say you can't play because it's quiet time, but your friend needs help. Jesus asks if helping someone in need is okay even when the rules say no work should be done.
Historical Background
This verse comes from Luke's Gospel, written around AD 60-80 to a Gentile audience. The cultural setting was one where Jewish laws regarding Sabbath observance were strictly followed and debated, especially by religious leaders like the Pharisees.
Living It Out Today
In modern times, this can relate to debates over what activities are permissible on days set aside for rest or worship in various faiths. For example, should we volunteer at a food bank on Sunday if it means not attending church?
