Aconteceu no ano em que o chefe supremo das forças armadas assírias foi enviado por Sargão, rei da Assíria, para atacar a cidade filisteia de Asdod, que acabou por conquistar.

Três anos antes o Senhor tinha dito a Isaías, filho de Amós: «Vamos! Desata a faixa que trazes à cintura e tira as sandálias que tens nos pés.» Ele assim fez, de modo que andava nu e descalço.

E o Senhor disse: «Há três anos que o meu servo Isaías caminha nu e descalço. É um sinal e um presságio para o Egito e para Cuche,

porque também o rei dos assírios levará os prisioneiros do Egito e os deportados de Cuche, novos e velhos, nus e descalços, o que será uma vergonha para o Egito.

Então os que confiavam em Cuche e se gabavam da ajuda do Egito ficarão dececionados e confundidos.»

Naquele dia, os habitantes destas regiões em que vivemos hão de exclamar: «Vejam em que ficaram as nossas esperanças! Pensávamos encontrar proteção e auxílio junto deles, para nos livrarmos do rei da Assíria! Como poderemos agora salvar-nos?»
