Antes do rei do Egito atacar Gaza, o Senhor falou ao profeta Jeremias acerca dos filisteus. Eis o que o Senhor lhe disse: «Olha! Uma enchente vem do norte como um rio a transbordar.

Vão cobrir a terra e tudo o que ela tem, inundarão as cidades e o povo que nelas habita. Toda a gente gritará por socorro e chorará amargamente,

ao ouvir o trotar dos cavalos, o ruído dos carros e das rodas. Os pais não voltarão atrás para socorrer os filhos, porque já não têm força nem coragem!

Chegou o momento de destruir os filisteus, de os isolar de qualquer ajuda vinda de Tiro e Sídon. Eu, o Senhor, destruirei os filisteus, todos os que vieram da ilha de Creta.

Os habitantes de Gaza raparam a cabeça em sinal de luto, os de Ascalon foram reduzidos ao silêncio. Por quanto tempo ainda ficarão de luto os filisteus?

Exclamam: “Espada do Senhor! Quando é que vais parar? Volta para a tua bainha, descansa e fica quieta.”

Mas como poderá ela descansar, quando lhe dei trabalho para fazer? Mandei-a atacar Ascalon e o povo que habita junto ao mar.»
