Esta foi a mensagem que Jeremias deu a Baruque, filho de Nerias, no quarto ano de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, depois que Baruque terminou de escrever o rolo com as profecias de Jeremias, ditadas pelo profeta:

“Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, a você, Baruque:

Você anda reclamando: ‘Pobre de mim! Será que já não tenho sofrido o bastante? Por que o Senhor ainda me dá mais esta tristeza? Já não aguento mais; é um fardo pesado demais para mim’.

Mas o Senhor manda-me dizer o seguinte a você, Baruque: ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Estou destruindo o que construí e arrancando o que plantei em toda esta terra.

E você pensa em obter grandezas? Pare de pensar nisso! Vou trazer desgraça sobre toda a humanidade’, diz o Senhor, ‘mas deixarei você escapar com vida, esteja onde estiver’ ”.
