No quarto ano do reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, depois que Baruque, filho de Nerias, escreveu num rolo as palavras ditadas por Jeremias, este lhe disse:

"Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, a você, Baruque:

Você disse, ‘Ai de mim! O Senhor acrescentou tristeza ao meu sofrimento. Estou exausto de tanto gemer, e não encontro descanso’.

Mas o Senhor manda-me dizer-lhe: ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Destruirei o que edifiquei e arrancarei o que plantei em toda esta terra.

E então? Você deveria buscar coisas especiais para você? Não as busque; pois trarei desgraça sobre toda a humanidade’, diz o Senhor, ‘mas eu o deixarei escapar com vida onde quer que você vá’ ".
