Shilluk DC Bible © Bible Society in South Sudan, 2011
What Does This Mean?
In this verse, Abraham is speaking to his servant about finding a wife for Isaac. He says that if the woman doesn't want to go with the servant, then the servant is free from the promise, but he shouldn't bring Isaac back to that place.
Explained for Children
Imagine you're helping your friend find a new friend. If the person your friend likes doesn't want to be friends, you don't have to keep trying, but you shouldn't bring your friend to a place where they might feel sad.
Historical Background
This part of Genesis was written by Moses around 1446-1406 B.C. The audience was the Israelites, and the cultural setting was the nomadic and tribal lifestyle of the time, where family and lineage were crucial.
Living It Out Today
In modern times, if you're helping a friend look for a partner, and the person your friend is interested in isn't interested back, it's okay to stop pursuing it. Don't put your friend in a difficult situation.
