Lamentations 2:18
Shilluk DC Bible © Bible Society in South Sudan, 2011
What Does This Mean?
The verse describes people crying out to God, pleading for tears to flow like a river day and night. They are asking not to rest and not to cease looking for comfort. This is likely a plea from the people of Jerusalem, after the city has been destroyed.
Explained for Children
Imagine if your favorite playground was destroyed, and you were so sad that you wanted to cry all day long. This verse is like that but much sadder, where the people are so upset about their city being destroyed that they want to cry all the time and never stop looking for help.
Historical Background
Lamentations was written by Jeremiah around 587 BCE, after the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. The verse reflects the deep sorrow and the desperate cry for help from the people of Jerusalem.
Living It Out Today
When facing a significant loss, like a job or a relationship, one might feel overwhelmed with grief. This verse encourages us to let our emotions out, to cry and seek comfort, rather than suppressing our feelings.
