非利士 人聚集他們所有的軍隊到 亞弗 ； 以色列 人在 耶斯列 的泉旁安營。

非利士 人的領袖各率隊伍，或百或千的前進； 大衛 和他的人同 亞吉 跟在後邊前進。

非利士 人的領袖說：「這些 希伯來 人在這裏做甚麼呢？」 亞吉 對 非利士 人的領袖說：「這不是 以色列 王 掃羅 的臣僕 大衛 嗎？他在我這裏有些年日了。自從他投降直到今日，我未曾見他有甚麼過錯。」

非利士 人的領袖向 亞吉 發怒，對他說：「叫這人回去！叫他回到你指派他的地方去，不可讓他同我們出征，免得他在陣上反成為我們的敵人。他用甚麼與他主人復和呢？豈不是用我們這些人的首級嗎？

有人跳舞唱和說： 『 掃羅 殺死千千， 大衛 殺死萬萬』， 不就是這個 大衛 嗎？」

亞吉 叫 大衛 來，對他說：「我指著永生的耶和華起誓，你是個正直人。你隨我在軍中出入，我也很滿意。自從你投奔我到如今，我未曾看見你有甚麼過失，但是眾領袖看你不順眼。
7
現在你平平安安地回去，不要做 非利士 人領袖眼中看為惡的事。」
8
大衛 對 亞吉 說：「但我做了甚麼呢？自從僕人到你面前，直到今日，你查出我有甚麼過錯，使我不去攻擊我主我王的仇敵呢？」
9
亞吉 回答 大衛 說：「我知道你在我眼中是好人，如同上帝的使者一樣，只是 非利士 人的領袖說：『這人不可同我們上戰場。』
10
現在，你和跟隨你來的，就是你主人的僕人，清晨要早早起來，回到我所指派你的地方去，不要把中傷的話放在心上，因為你在我面前很好 。你們清晨早早起來，天一亮就回去吧！」
11
於是 大衛 和他的人清晨早早起來，回到 非利士 人的地去。 非利士 人也上 耶斯列 去了。
