以實瑪利 人把 約瑟 帶到 埃及 ，賣給 埃及 王的一個臣僚—侍衛長 波提乏 。

上主與 約瑟 同在，使他事事順利。他住在 埃及 主人的家裡；

主人發現上主與他同在，使他所做的事都成功。
4
波提乏 喜歡 約瑟 ，委派他作自己的侍從，管理家務和他所有的一切。
5
從那時起，由於 約瑟 的緣故，上主賜福給那 埃及 人的家；他家裡和田園所有的也都蒙福。
6
波提乏 把一切都交給 約瑟 管理，除了自己的飲食，他什麼都不去管。 約瑟 體格健壯，英俊瀟灑；
7
不久，主人的妻子看上了他，要跟他睡覺。
8
約瑟 拒絕了，對她說：「你想，我主人把他所有的一切都交我管理，我在這裡，他就不必為家務操勞。
9
在這家庭裡，我跟他一樣有權，除你以外，他沒有什麼不交給我的，因為你是他的妻子。我怎麼可以做這種不道德的事，得罪上帝呢？」
10
雖然女主人天天用話勾引 約瑟 ， 約瑟 始終拒絕跟她睡覺，也不和她在一起。
11
有一天， 約瑟 到屋裡辦事，那時，一個家僕都不在。
12
女主人抓著 約瑟 的外袍，說：「來跟我睡覺吧！」 約瑟 躲開她，跑到外面，外袍卻留在她手中。
13
她看見 約瑟 留下外袍跑出去，
14
就把家僕喊來，對他們說：「你們看，我丈夫帶回家來的 希伯來 人侮辱我們。他進我房間，想非禮我。我放聲尖叫；
15
他聽見我尖叫，就把外袍丟在我身邊，跑出去了。」
16
她留著 約瑟 的外袍； 約瑟 的主人回來，
17
她就向丈夫複述這件事：「你帶回來的那個 希伯來 奴才進我房間侮辱我。
18
我一尖叫，他就把外袍丟在我身邊，跑出去了。」
19
約瑟 的主人聽了妻子說「你那奴才竟然這樣侮辱我」這話，非常生氣，
20
叫人把 約瑟 抓起來，關進王室的監獄； 約瑟 就在那裡坐牢。
21
但是上主與 約瑟 同在，賜福給他；因此監獄長很喜歡他，
22
派他管理其餘的囚犯，負責處理監獄裡的事務。
23
約瑟 負責辦理的事，監獄長都不必操心；因為上主與 約瑟 同在，使他經管的一切都很順利。
