以色列人离开埃及后的第二年的正月，主在西乃旷野对摩西说：

“以色列人要在规定的日期守逾越节。
3
你们要在本月十四日的黄昏，遵照逾越节 的所有规定和条例守节。”
4
于是，摩西吩咐以色列人守逾越节。
5
他们在正月十四日黄昏时分，在西乃旷野上遵照主对摩西的所有训诫守逾越节。
6
但是，一些人因为接触了死尸而不洁净，不能在那天守逾越节。当天，他们找到摩西和亚伦，
7
对摩西说∶“我们因为接触了死尸而不洁净，可是为什么不准我们与其他的以色列人一起在指定的日子向主奉献呢？”
8
摩西对他们说∶“你们等候一下，让我听一下主关于你们的命令。”

主对摩西说∶

“你告诉以色列人∶‘你们或你们的后代如果有人因接触了死尸而不洁净，或是远行在外，他们仍然可以守逾越节。
11
他们应该在第二个月的十四日的黄昏时分守节。他们也要吃逾越节羊羔、无酵饼和苦菜，
12
不可把食物留到第二天早晨，不可折断羊的骨头。要遵行守逾越节的一切律例。
13
但是，如果有人是洁净的，也没有出外旅行，却不守逾越节，那么这个人就要从我的子民中除名，因为他没有在规定的日期向主奉献，他必承当自己的罪。
14
如果寄居的外侨要守逾越节，他必须遵守逾越节的所有规定和条例。无论本地人还是外侨，遵守的律法是相同的。’”

圣幕立起的当天，云彩就笼罩了圣幕，也就是存放约柜的帐幕。入夜，笼罩在圣幕上的云彩形状如火，直到清晨。
16
天天如此。
17
一旦云彩从圣幕上收上去，以色列人就启程出发；云彩一停住，以色列人就扎营不动。
18
以色列人按照主的指示决定行止，云彩在圣幕上停多久，以色列人就安营多久，
19
即使云彩在圣幕上停留很长时间，他们也遵从主的命令，安营不动。
20
有时云彩在圣幕上只停留几天，他们就遵照主的指示停留几天；
21
有时云彩在圣幕上仅仅停留一夜，清晨就收了上去，他们就随之起身。无论白天黑夜，只要云彩收上去，以色列人就拔营启程。
22
无论是两天，一个月，或是更长的时间，只要云彩还停留在圣幕上，以色列人就安营不动，一旦云彩收上去，人们就启程。
23
他们遵从主藉摩西颁布的命令，按照主的指示扎营，也按照主的指示起行。
