Por aquella época, el rey de Babilonia, Merodac Baladán, hijo de Baladán, envió cartas y un regalo a Ezequías, pues se había enterado de que había estado enfermo y se había recuperado.

Ezequías se alegró, y enseñó a los embajadores el lugar donde guardaba su tesoro: la plata, el oro, los perfumes y el aceite aromático; también les mostró su arsenal y todo lo que tenía almacenado. No hubo nada en su palacio y en todos sus dominios que Ezequías no les enseñase.

El profeta Isaías fue a ver al rey Ezequías y le preguntó: — ¿Qué te han dicho esos hombres? ¿De dónde han venido? Ezequías respondió: — Han venido de un país lejano, de Babilonia.

Isaías siguió preguntando: — ¿Y qué han visto en tu palacio? Respondió Ezequías: — Han visto todo. No hay nada de mis tesoros que no les haya enseñado.

Entonces Isaías dijo a Ezequías: — Escucha la palabra del Señor del universo:

Llegará un día en que se llevarán a Babilonia todo lo que tienes en tu palacio y todo cuanto atesoraron tus antepasados hasta hoy; y no quedará nada, dice el Señor.

También se llevarán a algunos de tus descendientes, que emplearán como siervos en el palacio del rey de Babilonia.

Ezequías contestó a Isaías: — Me parece bien la palabra del Señor que me has trasmitido. (Pues pensaba: al menos durante mi vida habrá paz y seguridad).
