Saul svarte: «Ja, sønnen min, du må dø! Måtte Gud ramme meg både nå og siden hvis jeg ikke holder ord.» Men da sa folket til Saul: «Skal Jonatan dø, når han har skaffet Israel denne store seieren? Det må slett ikke skje! Så sant Herren lever, skal det ikke krummes et hår på hodet hans, for han har handlet med Guds hjelp i dag.» Slik reddet folket Jonatan, så han slapp å dø.
