Palavra do Senhor, dirigida ao profeta Jeremias, acerca dos filisteus, antes de o Faraó ter atacado Gaza.

Assim fala o Senhor, «Eis que sobem as águas vindas do Norte, semelhantes a uma torrente que transborda, inundam o país e o que nele existe, a cidade e os seus habitantes. Soltam gritos os homens e gemem todos os habitantes do país.

Ouvindo o estrondo do galopar do seus cavalos, o ruído dos seus carros e o ranger das suas rodas, os pais já não cuidam dos seus filhos, cansados, deixam cair os braços.

É que surgiu o dia da ruína de todos os filisteus; o dia de cortar a Tiro e a Sídon os aliados que lhe restam, pois o Senhor vai arruinar os filisteus e o resto da ilha de Creta.

Gaza rapou a cabeça, Ascalon está aniquilada. Ai do resto dos anaquitas! Até quando farás incisões em ti?

Ó espada do Senhor, quando repousarás? Entra na tua bainha; descansa, pára um pouco!

Mas como poderá ela repousar, se é o Senhor quem a comanda contra Ascalon e contra a região litoral? É lá que Ele a espera!»
