Quindi Abram lasciò l' Egitto e si avviò verso il Negheb con sua moglie, tutti suoi beni e Lot che l' accompagnava.

Abram era assai ricco. Aveva molto bestiame, argento e oro.
3
Proseguì il suo viaggio dal Negheb fino a Betel, dove già una volta aveva piantato la sua tenda, tra Betel e Ai.
4
E là dove aveva già costruito un altare invocò il nome del Signore.
5
Anche Lot, che viaggiava con Abram, aveva pecore, buoi e tende.
6
E proprio per questa quantità di bestiame i pascoli non erano sufficienti per tutti e due
7
tanto più che, a quel tempo, anche i Cananei e i Perizziti abitavano quel territorio. Un giorno scoppiò una lite tra i pastori dei greggi di Abram e quelli di Lot.
8
Allora Abram disse a Lot: "Noi siamo come fratelli e quindi non ci devono essere liti tra me e te, né tra i miei e i tuoi pastori.
9
Dunque separiamoci: hai davanti a te tutta questa regione. Se tu andrai a sinistra, io andrò a destra; se invece tu andrai a destra, io andrò a sinistra".

Lot si guardò intorno e vide la pianura del Giordano. Prima che il Signore distruggesse le città di Sodoma e Gomorra, fino a Zoar era una valle tutta irrigata, come il giardino del Signore, come la terra d' Egitto.

Perciò Lot scelse per sé tutta la pianura del Giordano e se ne andò verso est. Così si divisero.
12
Abram abitò nella regione di Canaan, Lot invece nelle città della pianura e si spinse fino a Sodoma.
13
Ma gli abitanti di quella città erano perversi e peccavano contro il Signore.
14
Dopo che Lot se ne fu andato, il Signore disse ad Abram: "Guardati intorno, da questo luogo dove sei, volgi gli occhi a nord e a sud, a est e a ovest.
15
Io darò per sempre a te e ai tuoi discendenti tutta la terra che tu vedi.
16
Farò diventare i tuoi discendenti tanto numerosi che nessuno li potrà contare, come non si può contare la polvere sulla terra.
17
E ora va'. Percorri in lungo e in largo questa terra perché io te la darò".
18
Allora Abram spostò l' accampamento verso le Querce di Mamre che sono a Ebron e in quel luogo costruì un altare per il Signore.
