Per ordine di Sargon, re di Assiria, il comandante dell' esercito assiro attaccò la città filistea di Asdod e infine la occupò.

In quel periodo il Signore aveva detto a Isaia, figlio di Amoz, di togliersi i sandali e il sacco che indossava. Egli ubbidì e rimase sempre nudo e scalzo.

Poi, quando Asdod venne presa, il Signore disse: "Per tre anni il mio servo Isaia è andato in giro senza vestiti e scalzo. è stato un segno di quel che accadrà all' Egitto e all' Etiopia.

Da questi due paesi il re di Assiria porterà via, nudi, i prigionieri che ha catturato. Giovani e vecchi, andranno via scalzi e nudi, con le natiche scoperte; sarà una vergogna per l' Egitto.
5
Quelli che avevano posto la loro fiducia nell' Etiopia o si vantavano dell' Egitto, resteranno delusi e le loro speranze svaniranno.

Quel giorno, gli abitanti della costa della Filistea diranno: "Guarda che cosa è accaduto a questa gente. E pensare che noi avevamo chiesto loro di proteggerci contro il re di Assiria! Ma ora, come riusciremo a scampare?".
