Herre, min frelses Gud! Om dagen og om natten roper jeg for dig.

La min bønn komme for ditt åsyn, bøi ditt øre til mitt klagerop!

For min sjel er mett av ulykker, og mitt liv er kommet nær til dødsriket.

Jeg aktes like med dem som farer ned i hulen; jeg er som en mann uten kraft,

frigitt som en av de døde, lik de ihjelslagne som ligger i graven, som du ikke mere kommer i hu, fordi de er skilt fra din hånd.

Du har lagt mig i dypenes hule, på mørke steder, i avgrunner.

Din vrede tynger på mig, og med alle dine bølger trenger du mig. Sela.

Du har drevet mine kjenninger langt bort fra mig, du har gjort mig vederstyggelig for dem; jeg er stengt inne og kommer ikke ut.

Mitt øie er vansmektet av elendighet; jeg har påkalt dig, Herre, hver dag, jeg har utbredt mine hender til dig.

Mon du gjør undergjerninger for de døde, eller mon dødninger står op og priser dig? Sela.

Mon der fortelles i graven om din miskunnhet, i avgrunnen om din trofasthet?

Mon din undergjerning blir kjent i mørket, og din rettferdighet i glemselens land?
14
Men jeg roper til dig, Herre, og om morgenen kommer min bønn dig i møte.

Hvorfor, Herre, forkaster du min sjel? Hvorfor skjuler du ditt åsyn for mig?

Elendig er jeg og døende fra ungdommen av; jeg bærer dine redsler, jeg må fortvile.

Din vredes luer har gått over mig, dine redsler har tilintetgjort mig.
18
De har omgitt mig som vann hele dagen, de har omringet mig alle sammen.
19
Du har drevet venn og næste langt bort fra mig; mine kjenninger er det mørke sted.
