"Amaro è il mio lamento, ancor oggi, a stento posso trattenere i miei gemiti.

Come vorrei sapere dove si trova Dio! Mi presenterei davanti a lui,

esporrei il mio caso, farei valere tutte le mie ragioni.

Così ascolterei le sue risposte, capirei quel che ha da dirmi.

Mi contrasterebbe Dio con tutta la sua forza? No, anzi, mi starebbe a sentire.

Io sono onesto, gli parlerei di persona e Dio, il mio giudice, dovrà assolvermi per sempre.

Però se vado ad est, Dio non c' è e neanche ad ovest lo incontro;

a nord non lo vedo, anche se è all' opera; neanche a sud lo trovo, se si nasconde.

"Se Dio mi esamina, mi troverà come l' oro puro, perché egli conosce ogni mio passo.
11
Ho seguito fedelmente le sue orme, non mi sono scostato né a destra né a sinistra.
12
Non ho trasgredito i suoi ordini, ho custodito come un' eredità le parole della sua bocca.
13
Chi può fargli cambiare parere? Egli agisce come vuole.
14
Farà quel che ha deciso per me, come decide ogni cosa per tutti.
15
Perciò temo la sua presenza; se ci penso, ho paura di lui.
16
Sono colpito dall' Onnipotente; chi mi fa tremare il cuore è Dio,
17
non sono le tenebre, anche se sono circondato di oscurità.
