Sargon, rei d’Assíria, envià el general en cap de les seves tropes a la ciutat d’Asdod. Va assetjar-la i se n’apoderà.

Tres anys abans, el Senyor havia comunicat la seva paraula per mitjà d’Isaïes, fill d’Amós. Li digué: — Treu-te la roba de sac que et cobreix de la cintura en avall i no portis més les sandàlies. Isaïes ho va fer, i anava nu i descalç.

Després el Senyor va dir: — El meu servent Isaïes ha anat nu i descalç durant tres anys. Això és un senyal, un presagi contra Egipte i contra Etiòpia,

ja que el rei d’Assíria s’endurà presoners els egipcis i deportarà els etíops. Joves i vells aniran nus i descalços, ensenyant les vergonyes. Quina infàmia per als egipcis!

Tots els qui havien posat la confiança en Etiòpia i es gloriaven de l’ajuda egípcia quedaran consternats i avergonyits.
6
Aquell dia, els habitants d’aquesta banda del mar diran: “Què se n’ha fet, de les nostres esperances! Vam córrer a demanar ajuda als egipcis perquè ens salvessin del rei d’Assíria; i ara, com ho farem per escapar-nos-en?”
